Postnatal Stay
The fourth trimester, cared for

Rest is part of recovery.

A postnatal retreat is a place to stay in the first weeks after birth, where nurses, doulas and chefs look after you and your newborn so you can heal, sleep and learn. Postnatal Stay helps American families find one.

Where it comes from

An old idea, newly arrived in America

Across East Asia, the weeks after birth have long been treated as a protected time. A new mother stays warm, eats restorative food and is excused from daily work while family, and increasingly professionals, care for her and the baby.

Modern postnatal centers grew out of those traditions. In the US, the first retreats opened in hotels only recently, pairing that care with round-the-clock nursing and a hotel stay.

산후조리원

Sanhujoriwon · Korea

Sanhujori is the Korean practice of postpartum recovery. A sanhujoriwon is a dedicated center where mothers typically stay about two weeks after delivery, with a staffed nursery, nurses, massage and meals built around miyeokguk, the seaweed soup served to new mothers. For many Korean families it is a standard part of having a baby.

坐月子

Zuo yuezi · China & Taiwan

"Sitting the month" is a confinement period of roughly 30 to 40 days of rest, warmth and nourishing food. Yuezi centers in Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong offer it as a professional service, with nurses and dedicated postpartum menus.

里帰り

Satogaeri & beyond · Japan

In Japan, many mothers return to their parents' home to give birth and recover, and postpartum care stays are offered too. Similar confinement customs appear across Southeast Asia, each built on the same belief: the mother needs care as much as the baby.

Why stay

What a postnatal retreat gives you

Real sleep

An overnight nursery and trained staff take the night shift, bringing the baby to you for feeds so you can rest between them.

Physical recovery

Nurse check-ins, postpartum massage and, at some retreats, pelvic floor therapy support healing after a vaginal or cesarean birth.

Feeding support

Lactation consultants on hand for latch, supply and bottle questions, while feeding habits are still forming.

Nourishing meals

Three chef-prepared meals a day designed for postpartum recovery, with no cooking, shopping or dishes.

Confidence with your newborn

Hands-on classes in bathing, swaddling, soothing and safe sleep, so you head home knowing what to do.

Time together, with support

Partners can stay and learn alongside you, and emotional check-ins help catch early signs of postpartum mood changes.
